Before term starts

  • Register with your university’s Equitable Learning/Disability service and request an Equitable Learning Plan (note: the name for these plans varies by institution, e.g. it may be called a Student Access Plan, Learning Access Plan, Academic Adjustment Plan, or AccessAbility Plan).
  • A formal plan makes expectations clear and protects academic integrity while enabling adjustments that preserve learning outcomes (e.g., format changes, timing, environment).
  • You can choose how much personal or diagnostic information to share. In most universities, teaching staff see a summary of your learning needs and recommended adjustments, not your full medical history. You can always choose to explain more if you feel comfortable and think it will help them understand what is going on for you and how they can support you.

Two things to bear in mind:

  1. Many equitable learning plans require you to reach out to your academic to activate extensions or alternative assignments. Make sure you do this well before the deadline.
  2. Having an equitable learning plan doesn’t mean adjustments can be made in every situation. Some course requirements may be tied directly to the learning outcomes, like compulsory attendance.
  • Send a short, personalised email to each course convenor before Week 1. Don’t forget to attach (or link to) your equitable learning plan – if you make the academic look it up in the university system, they are less likely to read your plan.

Subject: Equitable Learning Plan for [__]

    Hi [Academic’s name],

I’m enrolled in [Course code/name] this term. I have an Equitable Learning Plan that outlines a few adjustments that will help me to reach my full potential this term. I’ve attached the ELP and highlighted the two adjustments most relevant to this course: [Adjustment A], [Adjustment B].

Could we confirm these before Week 1? If useful, I’m happy to meet for 10 minutes to keep it simple.

    Thanks very much

    [Your name], [Student ID]

Additional Questions for your course team (optional)
    – One-liner to request slides 48h early + short glossary of new terms.
    – Ask where captioned recordings/transcripts will be posted.
  • Quick self-audit: What spikes load—noise, pace, ambiguity, fine-motor tasks, overnight trips? Identify things you can do to reduce load (e.g. noise cancelling headphones).
  • Could assistive technology (tools like captions, text-to-speech, smart pens, colour overlays, or browser zoom) help you?
  • Identify low-barrier options if you don’t have an equitable learning plan (short extensions; equivalent-outcome alternatives).
